The Fear that Follows Courage
I’m in the eye of the needle now
A dark passage
where few dare tread
And even those of us
who volunteered
proceed with fear and doubt and dread.
Darkness all around
in front a glimmer bright
then the heart’s door shuts
and I forget
that there was ever any light.
I cower in this passageway
I fear for all I’ve ever known
is gone
and dead
destroyed
No way to rebuild the past
once shattered
and scattered
beyond repair.
In the future where am I?
Am I there
In bright white light surrounded
by all I’ve ever dared to dream,
Or in some dark passage way
still waiting
for an elusive hope
that wasn’t what it seemed.
