CHAPEL OF THE HOLY CROSS
Chapel of the Holy Cross
Sedona, AZ
The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a Sedona landmark, and a place where people of all denominations visit to feel peace, inspiration, and solace amidst the stunning red rocks.
In New York City, 1932, Marguerite Brunswig Staude paused to gaze at the Empire State Building – still under construction – when she saw a cross within its structure. The moment inspired a vision – that this image would make a wonderful modern church.
Throughout the years, she considered various sites in Los Angeles and Europe, but after her parents died, when she and her husband fell in love with Sedona, she knew she would build a memorial there to help people “find God through art.”
After 18 months of challenging construction, the Chapel was completed in April 1956.
Although the chapel was bequeathed to the Roman Catholic Church after her death, people of all faiths find their way here for the sheer beauty and majesty of this peaceful place and its breathtaking natural surroundings. All are welcome.
Inside you are free to sit quietly and enjoy the incredible peace that permeates a place where so many have found a space of quiet reflection.
You can say a few prayers, light a candle, or visit the gift shop located on the lower level. Enjoy the artwork, quietly take photos, or simply shut your eyes and allow a silent presence to fill you.
In any case, this beautiful building and the surrounding majesty of nature will elevate your soul.
