DEVIL’S BRIDGE

DEVIL’S BRIDGE

Devil’s Bridge

Sedona, AZ

Devil’s Bridge is a gorgeous natural sandstone arch carved at the edge of a plateau where a chunk fell away and the wind and rain carved an arch out of the remaining Supai sandstone. Can you imagine… the original plateau was laid down by mother nature between 280 and 300 million years ago.  The trail is short but getting there might take you an extra mile up and back, unless you have a high clearance vehicle.

Just under a mile each way the trail takes you past pretty washes where juniper, agave, and prickly pear cactuses grow amidst the red rocks. On the way in, some of the trees remind me of bonsai! They are smaller than usual in patches of this windswept area.

A quick uphill climb and some beautiful stone steps craved out by the forest service bring you to the vantage point where you will see the large arch immediately to your left. If you venture out onto the arch, tread carefully. There aren’t any guard rails.

Directions:
From Phoenix, take I-17 north to Hwy 179 (exit 298). Turn left onto 179 and follow it past the Village of Oak Creek to the Sedona (Burger King) “Y.”  There will be a big roundabout here with the Hyatt Pinon Pointe on the cliffs directly across from you. West 89A forks off to the left, and 89A is the right fork of the “Y.”

Go around the roundabout and exit onto West 89A.  Take this past most of the town until you see Dry Creek Road.  This is just a little ways past the Giant Gas Station to the right. Turn right onto Dry Creek Road and take it until you see FR 152 – a well-marked dirt road – on the right

If you don’t have a high clearance vehicle, park in the lot and hike the 1.3 miles to the trailhead.  If you do have a high-clearance vehicle, take FR 152 for about 1.3 miles where you will see a parking lot pulloff on the right side. There you will find the trailhead marked “Devil’s Bridge #120.”
