Sedona, Arizona Special Places- Montezuma's Well
Although not really in Sedona, Montezuma's Well is a nice stop if you are driving up from Phoenix. Here you will find a large natural 'lake' that has been formed in a sunken area in the desert among the rocks. Cliff dwellings still exist high above the lake, and you can take a short trail down to some of the dwellings near the water's edge.
The real treat, in my opinion, is taking a walk down to the spring where water comes out from the well, through the earth and into the creek. The spring is 76 degrees Fahrenheit all year round, and if you come, you must take off your shoes and socks and put your feet in the water! You'll swear it has a slight fizz to it as it massages your tension away.
This place is soothing to the spirit, and sacred to some of the Native people of the area. If you spend a few moments in silence here, you'll soon understand why.
| Directions: |
From Phoenix, take I-17 north to exit 293 which is marked McGuireville and Montezuma's well. Follow the road, oh about four miles or so (I'm guessing) until you see the signs to the right for Montezuma's well. You'll follow them and soon see the dirt parking lot. There is no fee, but there is a parks & rec hut, restrooms, and well-marked trails with plenty of interesting and educational signs to read along the way |
