On the east side of Kauai the Wailua river runs down from Mt. Wai'ale'ale all the way into the sea. You can take a very scenic drive inland on Highway 580 (Kuamo'o Road). which borders and climbs above the river. Stop first at Wailua State Park to catch a glimpse of the river or maybe to catch one of the famous Fern Grotto Boat tours. If you'd rather be on your own, rent a kayak and paddle up the river.
If you want to stay dry, get back on Highway 580 and keep heading inland, stopping along the way at all the overlooks on the left side of the road. You'll catch gorgeous glimpses of the river and you'll learn a great deal about the ancient heiaus, or temples that are still full of mana (life force). You will see temples that were believed to be used for human sacrifice while only a short distance away are the Birthing Stones where the Hawaiian royalty would lay to give birth to their babies.
Continue on, and you can visit Opaeka'a falls, just to the right side of the road. Stop here and take a short walk to the overlook for some beautiful pictures of this waterfall that flows year round. The pink bougainvillea flowers make a nice contrast to the lava rocks and water and you're sure to get some great photos. Bring a telephoto if you have one.
