If you've seen the television show "Fantasy Island" then you've already caught a glimpse of Wailua falls, the beautiful twin falls on Kauai that descend into a deep and inviting fresh water pool. The four mile detour off the main road is well worth the drive if you're a seeker of the rare and beautiful. Bring your camera. This is one picture you won't want to miss.
For those of you who like adventure, take the short but very steep, slippery, and muddy trail down to the pool. Look for the trail on the right side of the road, just before the fenced in parking and viewing area. There should be ropes strung to the trees, to keep you on the path. . . yes it is that steep!
Do not attempt this if you wish to remain clean! You are like to get black oozy mud all over your shoes, but who cares when you see the green pool, the thundering falls from below, and the white birds circling through the mists. Take a dip in the pool and wash all your cares away!
For a slightly safer adventure, go visit the Wailua Falls overlook in the full moonlight. Drive carefully on the road leading to the falls. All the frogs come out at night and you have to dodge them since they are slow to move! When you reach the falls you'll see liquid silver pouring into a black obsidian pool. Powerful, creepy, and beautiful all at once!
