Lumahai beach is one of my personal favorites. If you want to get away f rom everyone and everything this is the place to go. Although it is not always the best swimming beach (the surf can really kick up here and the undertow is strong), it is a great place to bring a book and lounge away the day.
Lava rocks protrude into the water and with the white froth of the waves crashing over the top you are guaranteed some good pictures. If you like shade you can grab a spot of sand under the wonderful trees that ring the shoreline.
On a very calm day in the summer you can swim and snorkel on the right hand side of the beach. There are colorful parrot fish, minnows, and a variety of other critters whose names I don't know. Kids like to jump off the lava rocks into the water and body surfing can be fun, but you must be very wary of the strong current.
If you look very close at the sand on Lumahai you will notice tiny dark green crystals. These are called olglvine and are crushed into tiny powders by the waves. I love this beach. The sand is soft. The surf is beautiful and there are rarely more than twenty people on the entire beach.

Take Hwy. 56 all the way north past the town of Hanalei and then look just past the 4 mile marker for a pullout near a sharp left hand turn. Park on the right side of the road and take the narrow but beautiful trail down to the beach. Once again, be vary wary of the surf here in all but the calmest conditions.
