 A two mile hike past Ke'e brings you to Hanakapia Beach. Sandy in the summer months, it offers a beautiful spot for sunning but beware of the heavy, tricky surf.
Hanakapia stream empties into the ocean here creating outstanding photo opportunities. You can play in the ocean and then rinse off in the refreshing stream. Or better yet, stand on the beach with your feet in the stream water for a really refreshing foot massage!
 In the winter the ocean steals the sand and you must be wary of the beautiful but treacherous waves as they pound over the lava rocks. Even in the summer, watch out. The undertow is strong and if you're not a good swimmer you might want to forget the waves and settle into the stream.
The hike to Hanakapia is a beautiful trip in itself, and if you want to make a day of this, you can go two miles inland and upstream to the beautiful Hanakapia falls. The beach alone is worth the trek in the summer but remember, fall through spring you might not find much sand here at all!

Take Hwy. 56 all the way north to the end of the road and park at Ke'e Beach. On the left, in the parking lot before you reach the beach, you'll see the trailhead next to a large sign.

Wear comfy hiking shoes, your swimsuit and comfy clothes. Bring plenty of water, a lunch, a camera, and more film than you think you'll need!
