You could eat your way through the island. . . well at least, I could! There are so many options to choose from. I've included many of my favorites below. They range from local dives to fine dining. You'll be sure to find something that you'll enjoy. . .

Or, be brave and try one of the many other fine dining establishments on the island.

*North Shore Dining*
	Ono Plate Lunch Special A Local Dive with Gourmet Tastes!
Try Ono Plate Lunch Special for a delightfully authentic Hawaiian meal. The portions will not disappoint you! For a very modest price you can get two large scoops of rice and your choice of one of many delicious dishes including Kalua pig (smoked tender pork & cabbage), chow mein noodles with vegetables, delicious ginger chicken stir fry, vegetable stir fry, etc. Or for a more conservative approach, order one of their homemade burgers. Mmm Mmm Good! Located along the street to the right and in front of the Ching Young Shopping Plaza in Hanale. After lunch, go to Lappert's Ice Cream and get a decadent Kauai Pie cone. Food Ecstasy!
	Zelo's Cafe Surf, Turf, Hawaiian Chicken, & Wonderful Tropical Drinks
If you order one of Zelo's seafood specials you are likely to spin off into tropical heaven. Try their thick mahi mahi with a pineapple/papaya salsa, or maybe you like it spicier! For a real treat try the crab stuffed fish....ohmygoshdelicious! And no meal would be complete without a tropical drink with the umbrella on top. Zelo's has a casual open-air setting with gourmet food. Be prepared to really dine. (808) 826-9700
	Hanalei Wakeup Cafe For the Early Risers
If you want a standard breakfast at an early hour, try the Hanalei Wakeup Cafe for fresh coffee, bacon, eggs, toast. By the time you're finished you'll be ready for a day of adventure. The open air atmosphere is casual and comfy. (808) 826-5551.
	Tahiti Nui You Can't Miss this One!
Tahiti Nui is a landmark on the north shore. Stop by the bar for a casual drink, or try the main restaurant for a scrumptious meal. You can sit outside on the patio and enjoy the balmy air. Call ahead to reserve space at the authentic luau on Friday nights where you might get lucky enough to meet Aunty Louise (808) 826-7320.
	Hanalei Gourmet Fine for a picnic or a casual meal
Go to the Hanalei Gourmet for lunch or to pick up a quick picnic lunch for your hike. Have them wrap a deliciously casual gourmet meal to go and head for one of the beaches at sunset. Or enjoy a lazy evening here with live entertainment. No matter how you eat here, you can't lose. (808) 826-2524.

*East Shore Dining*
	Papaya's Natural Foods A Health food Store with Delicious Takeout
Papaya's is a great little health food store in the Kauai Village in Kapaa. Along with the regular items you'll find delicious baked goods and quick healthy takeouts. (808) 823-0190.
	Violet's Place A Little Bit of Everything
Violet's is just the place for a reasonably priced breakfast or lunch. You can find most of the standard fare here along with island specials such as Kalua pig and cabbage over rice. Mmm. Inexpensive and tasty. (808) 822-2456
	*Mema Thai* Thai Gourmet in an Elegant Setting
Mema Thai is SO good if you if you're a curry lover. Stop by for a generous portion of your favorite Thai foods served in an elegant indoor garden-like setting. Although the place appears to cater to a more well-dressed local clientele, they were kind enough to let me in with shorts for a casually elegant lunch. I was thrilled! Located in the Sizzler Shopping Center across from the Shell station in Kapaa. (808) 823-0899
	Ma's Family Restaurant It's not fancy but it sure is good!
You can't find a more reasonably priced and tasty breakfast than in Ma's vinyl and formica restaurant. Order bacon, eggs, papaya pancakes, juice and Kona coffee for a price that won't break your budget. Ma is a real sweet woman so you might want to say hi! Located on Halenani Street in Lihue. Take Rice to Kress to Hanlenani. (808) 245-3142

*South Shore Dining*
	Brennecke's Beach Broiler Beachview Dining...Great for Sunset!
Brennecke's is a landmark on the south shore. Destroyed by hurricanes and rebuilt again and again, the second floor restaurant offers wonderful beach and sunset views. Try their salad bar, their yummy rolls and one of their delicious meals for a satisfying dinner in an open-air setting. (808) 742-7588
	Tidepools Restaurant Elegant Outdoor Dining at the Hyatt
Tidepools is a romantic restaurant, where the tables sit under thatch roofs and huge goldfish swim in the channels of water surrounding the tables. Order their Maui Onion Soup for a killer appetizer and if you want beautiful drop dead delicious food, ask about their special of the day. I can't help but overeat here. Everything is way, way too good. Not cheap, but definitely worth the price. (808) 742-1234
	Ilima Terrace Casual Dining in an Elegant Setting
Go to the Hyatt Resort and then walk through the main lobby to the Ilima terrace overlooking the fountains and the gorgeous beach beyond. You can order drinks, appetizers, or a casual meal while listening to live entertainment. A must for a lazy afternoon after the beach. (808) 742-1234
	Keoki's Paradise Surf and Turf in a Tropical Setting
Keoki's is an island establishment where you can't help but enjoy the meal. Try their orange glazed or teriaki fish, island chicken, or tender beef. The garden setting is tropical and lush. You'll be happy here after a long day of fun in the sun. (808) 742-7534
	Taqueria Norenos When you must have nachos. . .
If you crave nachos or burritos (and since I live in the southwest, I do) try a quick stop here for a snack or a lunch. Then if you come at the right time you can stay for the free hula show in the middle of the Poipu Plaza shops. Call for more info. (808) 742-7222

West Side Dining

I haven't eaten much on the west side, but I do like to stop at one of the local delis in the town of Waimea before heading up in Waimea Canyon/Kokee State park. Grab a sandwich, some fruit, snacks, and cool drink. You'll definitely want to pull off the road and picnic!
