Kauai - Awaapuhi Trail |
|
The Awaawapuhi trail is a three mile trek inside the forests of Kokee State park, that will take you to an overlook 2500 feet above the ocean.
Look down into an unspoiled valley and out onto the sea beyond the jagged Na Pali coastline. In the winter and early spring you may get lucky and see a whale or two in the distance. Bring binoculars if you come at this time of year.
The hike itself is wonderful. You pass through thick tree groves and miniature forests of fiddlehead ferns, some of them up to waist high. If you're hungry you can munch on the wild berries that grow alongside of the trail.
Don't let the steep decline frighten you. The hike back isn't as bad as it looks. And you will certainly enjoy a wonderful hike in paradise!
| Directions: |
Take Hwy. 56 south till it merges into Hwy 50. Drive all the way south and west past the town of Waimea until you see Waimea Canyon Drive (Hwy. 550) to the right. It is a rather unassuming road and you have to watch for it. Go right and up and up onto Waimea Canyon Drive until you enter Kokee park and go past the park headquarters. The trailhead is just past pole #152 at the top of the hill to your left.
